So I guess I can make a blog called “this is black culture” and post gang and crime records and that’s 100% okay. Or “this is Muslim culture” and make it all about terrorism. But wait, you cry. Not all black people are criminals and not all Muslims are terrorists. That’s unfair! And racist! WELL GOLLY GEE DO YOU THINK SO? Because saying that all white people are responsible for the Atlantic slave trade sounds pretty racist to me, given that, you know, that was between the African slaveholders and the British and Americans and had absolutely nothing whatsoever to do with my ancestors, who were incredibly poor farmers and serfs from Ireland and Lithuania who had to flee to America at around the turn of the century (by which time slavery had already been abolished in the US) because they were being treated like slaves. Even if they had been living in America at the time when slavery was legal they wouldn’t have been able to afford a slave; in fact they probably would have been working with them in the fields and treated about the same, since the first slaves in America were actually white serfs. But please, tell me more about how dirty my hands are because of circumstances surrounding my birth that I could not control and continue to treat me differently based on the color of my skin without actually knowing anything about my heritage, I’m sure that isn’t racist at all! I was going to say precisely the same thing. None of my ancestors stepped foot onto America until prior to WWI with the sole exception of the tiny fraction of Native American in me who sure as hell weren’t responsible for the slave trade. Oh my god why are white people so ignorant I’m so ashamed of all of you Yes, YOU did not participate in racial segregation or slave trading or racial abuse or what the fuck ever, but you ARE reaping the benefits of what white people did, and the fact that “but boohoo i’m not related to these people” does not matter. Society raises you up on a pedestal for being white and looks down upon those who are not. Get over your goddamn “but I’m not a racist they were” complex because the only thing you’re doing is furthering the oppression of minorities and refusing to allow them a voice. You’re not racist? If you say that then I highly doubt that it’s true, because someone who is truly not a racist is always looking to learn what acts are oppressive and racist and what is not, as defined by people of color rather than by white people, and even then, years and years of being taught what isn’t racist is very hard to undo. When one’s been surrounded by subtle racism and told that it’s okay for such a long time, you can’t just flip a switch and suddenly not be racist. So go cry me a river. You didn’t participate in “active racism” (as misleading a term as that is) back in its hey day—who the fuck cares? You are still privileged and by trying to act like you’re not, you are encouraging racism. Once again I say get over it. Learn from the mistake you just made and become a little less racist. Sincerely, a white person who actually cares about eliminating racism. P.S. Just because slavery was abolished by the time your ancestors got here does not mean that racism wasn’t inherent, and it does not mean your ancestors were not racist. Stop trying to excuse yourself.$
